ABOUT THE SYMPHONIC BAND OF FLORIDA
The Symphonic Band of Florida is a touring concert band bringing together a unique combination of professional musicians, music educators, retired educators, military musicians, and accomplished community musicians from throughout Florida and beyond.
Drawing musicians from throughout the Tampa Bay region of Florida and beyond, the Symphonic Band of Florida is organized specifically for international performance tours and cultural exchange. Unlike a traditional community band with a regular local concert season, the ensemble is formed each summer to share music, friendship, and cultural experiences throughout Europe.
The Tampa Bay region is home to a remarkable number of community and civic bands whose members continue to demonstrate that musical growth, performance, and friendship need not end with school or professional careers. The Symphonic Band of Florida was created to provide these musicians with opportunities to take their music beyond their local communities and share it with audiences throughout Europe.
Members come not only from the Tampa Bay region, but from throughout Florida and across the United States. In recent tours, approximately fifteen percent of participating musicians have traveled from outside Florida to join the ensemble. The 2026 touring ensemble includes musicians from numerous U.S. states, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, reflecting the friendships and international connections developed through previous tours.
The ensemble’s repertoire is intentionally diverse, blending classical transcriptions, popular favorites, film music, Broadway selections, marches, Americana, and music inspired by the cultures and communities visited during each tour. Performances are designed to encourage cultural exchange through collaborations and interactions with local musicians, host organizations, and audiences throughout Europe.
Where opportunities exist, the Symphonic Band of Florida enjoys sharing performances with local European ensembles, believing that music is one of the world’s most effective means of fostering friendship, understanding, and goodwill between people of different cultures and backgrounds. The organization views every performance as an opportunity not only to present music, but also to strengthen the connections that unite communities across borders and generations.
Under the musical leadership of Dr. Jeffrey L. Traster, Music Director, and Ted M. Hope, Associate Director, the ensemble continues its commitment to musical excellence, cultural exchange, and international friendship.
While members may perform with other organizations throughout the year, they come together through a shared belief that music is one of the world’s most powerful tools for building friendships, fostering cultural understanding, and creating lasting memories.

The Symphonic Band of Florida is led by two distinguished music educators and conductors whose combined experience spans more than seven decades of service to music education, performance, and community engagement. Their leadership reflects a shared commitment to musical excellence, lifelong learning, and international cultural exchange.
Dr. Jeffrey L. Traster
Music Director
Jeffrey L. Traster, DMA, is Professor Emeritus of Music at The University of Tampa, where he served for nineteen years as Director of Bands and Head of Music Education, including six years as Music Department Chair. A respected conductor, educator, composer, clinician, adjudicator, and low-brass specialist, Dr. Traster has taught in Texas, Ohio, and Florida and remains active throughout the music profession.
He holds degrees from Baylor University, the University of Colorado at Boulder, and The University of Texas at Austin. Following his retirement from The University of Tampa, he founded Allegrezza Music Publications and continues to compose extensively for concert band, chamber ensembles, soloists, and educational settings. His works are performed by school and community ensembles throughout the United States.
A strong advocate for music as a vehicle for friendship and cultural understanding, Dr. Traster has helped shape the Symphonic Band of Florida’s commitment to international performance and cultural exchange.

Ted M. Hope
Associate Director
Ted M. Hope retired in 2023 following a distinguished thirty-nine-year career with Hillsborough County Public Schools, including nineteen years as Supervisor of Middle and Secondary Music. He previously served as Director of Bands at Hillsborough High School and Bloomingdale High School and remains highly respected as a conductor, clinician, adjudicator, and advocate for music education.
A graduate of Hillsborough Community College, Florida State University, and The University of Southern Mississippi, Mr. Hope has held numerous leadership positions within the Florida music community, including service as Chairman and Secretary of the Florida Bandmasters Association.
Today, he continues to conduct both the Fanfare Concert Winds and the Hillsborough Community College Band while remaining active as a guest conductor and mentor. His dedication to lifelong music-making and community engagement makes him an invaluable member of the Symphonic Band of Florida’s leadership team.

TOUR HISTORY
Since 2022, the Symphonic Band of Florida has presented a series of international concert tours designed to combine musical performance, cultural exploration, and unforgettable travel experiences. Each tour has provided opportunities for musicians and travelers to experience new destinations while sharing American concert band traditions with audiences throughout Europe.
2022 European Concert Tour
The ensemble’s inaugural European concert tour brought together forty-three musicians and a dozen family members and friends for twelve days of performances, sightseeing, and cultural exploration throughout Central Europe.
Concerts were presented in Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic, introducing the newly formed ensemble to international audiences while allowing participants to experience some of Europe’s most celebrated historic and cultural destinations. The success of the tour established the foundation for future international projects and demonstrated the enthusiasm for combining musical performance with meaningful travel experiences.
The friendships formed during this first journey continue to shape the organization today and inspired the development of future tours.
2024 European Concert Tour
The second European tour expanded significantly in both size and scope, attracting ninety-six travelers, including sixty musicians.
Performances throughout Italy provided opportunities to perform in remarkable historic settings while experiencing the country’s rich artistic, architectural, and musical heritage. From historic churches and town squares to unforgettable cultural experiences, participants enjoyed a unique blend of music, travel, and fellowship.
Following the concert tour, many participants continued their European adventure through an optional Mediterranean cruise extension. The success of the Italy tour further strengthened the organization’s reputation and attracted new musicians interested in future international travel opportunities.
2026 European Concert Tour
The 2026 European Concert Tour represents the ensemble’s third international journey and its most ambitious undertaking to date. Sixty-eight performers and directors will participate in performances across Germany, Belgium, and France while exploring The Netherlands and a variety of significant cultural and historic destinations.
The itinerary combines iconic European cities, meaningful historical experiences, and memorable performance venues. Participants will attend an evening with André Rieu in Maastricht, perform as part of Flemish Community Day festivities in Antwerp, celebrate Bastille Day with a concert in Normandy, and conclude the tour with a performance at the American Church in Paris.
Following the concert tour, many participants will continue their European experience through an optional Viking River Cruise extension.
The 2026 itinerary reflects the continued growth of the organization and its commitment to providing memorable musical and travel experiences for participants and audiences alike.

With each tour, the Symphonic Band of Florida continues to build upon a growing tradition of international performance, cultural discovery, and shared musical experiences. From Central Europe to Italy and now Western Europe, the organization remains dedicated to creating opportunities for musicians to explore the world while sharing their music with audiences abroad.

Thursday, July 9, 2026
The ensemble’s first concert of the 2026 tour will take place in Aachen, a historic city located near the borders of Germany, Belgium, and The Netherlands. Following a morning rehearsal at the nearby Eurogress Convention Centre, the band will perform an outdoor concert in Stadtpark Aachen, near the park’s central fountain.
The performance marks the official beginning of the concert tour and offers an opportunity to introduce the ensemble to European audiences while sharing a program of American and international favorites. Following the concert, the group will depart for Maastricht to attend an evening performance by André Rieu.
Saturday, July 11, 2026
The Symphonic Band of Florida is honored to participate in Antwerp’s annual Flemish Community Day celebrations, one of Belgium’s most significant cultural events. Throughout the city, musical ensembles, cultural organizations, and community groups will gather to celebrate Flemish heritage through performances and public festivities.
The band will present two thirty-minute performances in the outdoor concert area adjacent to the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp. The event provides a unique opportunity to perform before an international audience while participating in a celebration that reflects the rich cultural traditions of Belgium and the Flemish region.
Tuesday, July 14, 2026
The third concert of the tour will take place in the village square of St-Aubin-sur-Mer on the Normandy coast of France. Presented on Bastille Day, France’s national holiday, the concert offers an opportunity to share music with residents and visitors in a community known for its hospitality and longstanding support of cultural events.
Located near many of the historic sites associated with the D-Day landings, the setting provides a meaningful backdrop for a program celebrating friendship, freedom, remembrance, and international goodwill. The performance is expected to be one of the most memorable experiences of the tour.

The 2026 European Concert Tour concludes with a performance at the American Church in Paris, one of the city’s most respected concert venues. Following several outdoor performances throughout the tour, the ensemble will enjoy the acoustical warmth of an indoor setting while presenting its final concert in the heart of Paris.
Located just steps from the Seine River and within view of many of Paris’s most iconic landmarks, the American Church provides a fitting setting for the tour’s finale. The concert will celebrate the friendships, memories, and musical experiences shared throughout the journey and serve as the culmination of another memorable European adventure for the Symphonic Band of Florida.

The following selections are presented in alphabetical order and do not reflect concert programming or performance order. Individual concert programs will vary by venue, audience, performance length, and local circumstances. Each performance will be selected from the works listed below.
An American in Paris
Few works capture the excitement of international travel as vividly as George Gershwin’s An American in Paris. Written following the composer’s visits to France during the 1920s, the work portrays an American traveler wandering through the streets of Paris, taking in the sights, sounds, and atmosphere of one of the world’s great cultural capitals.
Gershwin blended the sophistication of European orchestral music with distinctly American jazz influences, creating a sound world that was revolutionary for its time. The music moves effortlessly between bustling city scenes, moments of reflection, and passages filled with humor and charm.
As the Symphonic Band of Florida concludes its 2026 tour in France, this work serves as a fitting musical reminder that travel broadens our perspectives and that music remains one of the world’s most universal languages.
Bohemian Rhapsody
More than fifty years after its release, Bohemian Rhapsody remains one of the most recognizable and celebrated works in popular music history. Freddie Mercury’s groundbreaking composition challenged traditional songwriting conventions by combining ballad, opera, hard rock, and symphonic elements into a single unforgettable musical experience.
Philip Sparke’s arrangement preserves the dramatic sweep and emotional contrasts of the original while showcasing the expressive capabilities of the modern concert band. From its intimate opening moments to its triumphant conclusion, the work continues to captivate audiences of all ages.
Its international popularity reflects one of the central themes of this tour: great music transcends borders, generations, and cultures.
Finlandia
Composed in 1899, Finlandia emerged during a period of growing Finnish national identity and quickly became a symbol of perseverance, freedom, and hope. Although rooted in Finland’s history, the work’s message has resonated with audiences throughout the world.
The composition begins with dark, dramatic intensity before gradually giving way to one of the most beloved hymn melodies in all of classical music. The contrast between struggle and triumph gives the work its enduring emotional power.
For performers and listeners alike, Finlandia serves as a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the ability of music to inspire courage and unity.
Goin’ Home
Based on the famous Largo movement from Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, From the New World, Goin’ Home has become one of the most cherished melodies in the classical repertoire. Although often associated with American folk traditions, its origins lie in the imagination of a Czech composer inspired by the sounds, landscapes, and spirit of America.
This arrangement holds special significance for the Symphonic Band of Florida. It was created by Rob Romeyn, a respected Tampa Bay music educator, composer, and arranger whose work has been performed by bands throughout the United States and around the world.
The music evokes feelings of reflection, gratitude, longing, and homecoming. Particularly meaningful during the band’s visit to Normandy, Goin’ Home provides an opportunity for performers and audiences alike to pause and reflect on themes of remembrance, sacrifice, peace, and the enduring hope for a better future.
Groovitude
Representing the contemporary side of today’s concert band repertoire, Groovitude combines modern rhythms, energetic textures, and infectious musical momentum. Composer Randall Standridge has become one of the most frequently performed composers of his generation, known for creating works that challenge performers while connecting immediately with audiences.
The piece is driven by pulse, rhythm, and motion, creating a musical experience that feels both fresh and familiar. Its modern harmonic language reflects the continuing evolution of wind band literature.

Guus Meeuwis Medley
Few contemporary performers are more closely associated with Dutch popular music than Guus Meeuwis. Since the mid-1990s, his songs have become part of the cultural fabric of The Netherlands, earning him a devoted following and making him one of the country’s most successful recording artists.
This medley brings together several of Meeuwis’s best-known songs, including favorites that have become familiar to generations of Dutch audiences. Filled with memorable melodies, heartfelt lyrics, and an unmistakable sense of optimism, the music reflects the warmth and spirit of modern Dutch popular culture.

March of the Belgian Paratroopers
One of Europe’s most beloved military marches, March of the Belgian Paratroopers has been a favorite of bands throughout the world since its composition in the years following World War II. The march carries special significance for the 2026 tour as the ensemble performs in Belgium. Including music connected to the countries we visit is an important part of the Symphonic Band of Florida’s philosophy of cultural exchange and musical friendship.

Selections from Les Misérables

This concert band arrangement brings together many of the show’s most memorable melodies, allowing audiences to revisit beloved musical moments in a symphonic setting. The emotional range of the score provides opportunities for both intimate expression and dramatic power.

Shenandoah

Tulips from Amsterdam

Zirkus Renz

The Symphonic Band of Florida hopes to continue its tradition of international touring with a concert tour of Scotland in 2028, culminating with attendance at the world-famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
